Only two kilometers after starting the stage, Jonny proved he was serious attacking with three more riders: Ibai Salas (BBH), Aitor González (EUS) and the Eritrean Gebreigzabhier (DDD).

The group opened a gap of 4 minutes, but the bunch controlled the distance. Lastra, who had to fight each climb against rivals with the same objective, crowned first Jaizkibel (2nd) and second Maddiola (3rd). Thomas De Gendt (LTS) and Dario Cataldo (AST) had contacted the head of the race on the ramps of the second climb. The rider of Caja Rural-Seguros RGA decided not to wait for the last meters and attacked soon in Garate (3rd), crowning again in the first position struggling with the African champion. The adventure of the group concluded before the top of Aia (3rd), penultimate rise of the first stage around Zarautz.

Jonathan Lastra: It’s been a good day. I knew that the important thing was to catch the break and once there I had my options, since I am fast and in the mountain I have good legs. Other years I fought with pride but this time I have to use my head. I knew what I had to do and I fought hard. I think that the arrival of De Gendt has been good for us. I would like to keep the jersey until the end, I think I can, but I know it will be very complicated. The feelings are good and I’m sure I’ll fight it.

Julian Alaphilippe (QST) won the stage beating the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (TLJ). Both were the strongest in the final climb to Elkano. Álex Aranburu was the best Caja Rural-Seguros RGA rider in the finish line.
