Great start for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA riders in the first of the three rounds on Portuguese soil that will race the team this summer. Rafael Reis has won this Thursday the prologue of 8 km of the Joaquim Agostinho Trophy, stopping the clock at 8:33, 3” better than his compatriot Jose Fernandes and 6″ better than the Australian Nick Schultz, completing the great day for the Navarrese squad.

This is the third victory for Caja Rural-Seguros RGA this season. Nelson Soto was the fastest in the second stage in Vuelta a Madrid and Yannis Yssaad won in the Rhône Alpes Isère Tour. Furthermore, it’s the first triumph of the Portuguese wearing this jersey since his arrival last season. A great joy for a specialist in this type of stages as it was evidenced by his triumph in the prologue of Vuelta a Portugal two seasons ago.

Rafael Reis: I am very happy for this victory, it was a complicated start to the season, things just do not come out sometimes and you have to wait for better times. The team has given me the opportunities that I needed and they have always believed in me. I had won this prologue in 2016 and I was able to repeat, although the strong wind made it impossible to get close to the 10:19 that I got then. The truth is that I have been training well. I hope that this result is an extra motivation to keep the jersey these days. On Sunday its my birthday but the last climb is very hard, I know it very well, we will still fight to get something good with me or with other riders like Nick, who finished third showing that he is strong.

Reis will wear the leader yellow jersey on Friday in the first stage of the Agostinho Trophy, a 162 km route between Ventosa and Sobral de Monte Agraço.
